The Cheung Chau Jiao Festival originated in the 19th century, when local residents held religious ceremonies to pray to the gods for the appeasement of the souls of the deceased to ward off plagues. This tradition continues today as an annual 5-day, 4-night community event aimed at praying for peace and prosperity. In 2011, the festival was inscribed onto the national list of intangible cultural heritage.
Our community-led initiative, “Metaversing Intangible Cultural Heritage: Documenting, Transmitting and Promoting the Cheung Chau Jiao Festival in Hong Kong” (非遺+元宇宙:長洲太平清醮研究記錄、傳承與推廣), aims to critically document and narrate the Festival using cutting-edge mixed reality technology.
Please register here to join us for an exciting showcase of the project. We look forward to welcoming you to this unique cultural experience!
